Movies & Fragrances

In 1911, Italian poet Giotto Canudo published his famous "Declaration of the Seventh Art", declaring for the first time that cinema is an art, a "seventh art" that combines the six arts of architecture, music, painting, sculpture, poetry and dance. In 1929, in order to match the plot of the film "Broadway Song", the staff poured perfume into the ventilation system so that the audience could smell the fragrance, which was the world's first "scented film"!

However, putting aside the aid of external olfactory equipment, how the film tells or expresses the scent in its own language has been the theme that attracts many directors. We used the feast of taste in "Men and Women", had dinner with Julia Roberts in "Food, Prayer and Love", imagined the old odor and the pure fragrance in "Perfume", and felt the difference in taste due to class division in "Parasite" ...... We were surprised to find that the eyes can also mobilize the sense of smell. The senses, the original film also has so many smells.

In many movies, the smell often has a close relationship with various plants. For example, in the "Flirt Magician" each plant has its own smell and mood, and is used in different situations and occasions.

Plants in nature transmit information with the help of scent, the aromatic molecules they release are a message transmitting substance, and almost all plants that can release fragrance will contain essential oils. Man's fascination with plants does not only come from the attraction of scent, but also means that man aspires to a close connection with nature by nature. Throughout the ages, both the ancient incense and the modern aromatherapy machines are all about mobilizing the essence of plants to awaken oneself, in order to achieve a resonance between the body and nature. There are many songs about fragrant woods and herbs in the Book of Psalms and the Book of Chu: "Drinking the dew of magnolia, eating the dew of autumn chrysanthemums." "He picks Xiaooxi and does not see it for a day, as in three autumns. The "Xiao" in this case is "Xiao". Here the "Xiao" and "Ai" are more commonly used herbs in ancient times, which also shows that the preference for plants is not just a matter of today's people.

For perfumers, perfume is to show a state of mind, an art, or a pursuit of aesthetics. For us who are running around in the world, aromatherapy machines may not be essential for our daily needs, but that does not mean we give up the perception of scent. In today's fast-paced world, emptiness and materials are filling all corners of life, can we re-experience some neglected or forgotten feelings with the help of smell and scent? Just like Eileen Chang said the taste of memories is the fragrance of camphor. When we finish the busy day, can we have the company of scent in the quiet night?

Fragrance, is a simple life. Issey Miyake said; "Fragrance is the fresh air." In the most ordinary air, there is the greatest inspiration.
